The Struggles with Sun and Shadows in 3D Chalk Art

Sometimes, my illusion isn’t illusioning the way I’d hoped... and the sun certainly doesn’t help! ☀️ Shadows can be a real challenge, even for artwork that doesn’t rely on illusions. Those harsh lines and bright spots make it hard to capture the piece as it’s meant to be seen.


In the world of temporary art like chalk, photos are everything. Once the artwork is washed away, all you have left are those photos to remember it by. That’s why it’s so important to get the shot just right—and why I sometimes find myself standing there, waiting for the perfect moment. Like a cloud to block the sun for just long enough to snap a photo!


If you’ve ever been a chalk artist, or watched one in action, you’ve probably seen this dance with the weather before. It’s all part of the challenge—and the fun.
