Chalk Pastels - Black/Charcoal Sticks

This type of chalk pastel is great for achieving a true black color in chalk. I recommend using this for outlining your piece (it really makes it "pop") and for a general black color. It's also great to add some shading on some pieces, but be careful! A little goes a long way. You could get this set if you need a lot of black, or get the assorted Graytones set also mentioned on this page.

Colored Pencils

If you're looking at adding color to your sketches on paper, this is a fantastic brand of colored pencils. Great colors and blend really well. This is the exact set I got when I was first using colored pencils.

Glitter Sidewalk Chalk

I know, it's glitter - but hear me out! It's really fun for kids AND adults. If you're trying to jazz up your chalk art, but aren't quite ready for shading or blending, this is a great way to do that. Plus, the glitter stays outside. Yay!

Tempera Paint - Black Half Gallon

Don't want to commit to multiple paint colors? You can't go wrong with a basic black. This is a fantastic base layer for any chalk drawing. It's like primer on the walls before painting. This is water-based paint and will wash away eventually, but will last much longer than any soft pastel or sidewalk chalk.

Tempera Paint - Basic Colors Set

If you're an aspiring street painter or have one at home, this is a great paint kit to start out with. You can use this paint as a base to put chalk on top of, or use it as liquid chalk instead. This is water-based paint and will wash away eventually, but will last much longer than any soft pastel or sidewalk chalk.

Sidewalk Chalk

Can't go wrong with some sidewalk chalk. The colors won't have as much pigment as a chalk pastel, but are a great cost effective option. These are also great for younger kids as they're easier to hold and don't break as easily.
